As part of the City of Smyrna’s program management contract, Croy Engineering prepared roadway design plans for the new connector located between the redevelopment project of Belmont Hills and already existing Ward Street. It was determined that a single lane roundabout would be the most cost effective solution, provide the greatest benefit to traffic movements, and have a minimal right-of-way impact.

Prior to beginning this project, Ward Street was comprised of two lanes in each direction, with curb and gutter, and sidewalk. The roadway has since been reduced to one lane in each direction, with a raised landscaped median. The design of the three-legged, single lane roundabout incorporated the proposed Ward Street road “diet” which was constructed after the roundabout was completed.

Key Components Included:

  • Investigation of three potential alternates: three way stop condition, signalized intersection, and installation of a roundabout
  • Preparation of roadway design along with recommendations for the tie-in with Ward Street
  • Coordination with the proposed improvements to Ward Street
