Fairground North End Roundabout

Single Lane Roundabout with Dual By-Pass Lanes

The turning movements from Fairground Street to Allgood Road, and vice versa, are the heaviest maneuvers. The original intersection had stop control for three of the four approaches and yield control for the dual northbound right turn lanes on Fairground Street. This configuration caused confusion that resulted in an increased occurrence of crashes, as well as long queues affecting adjacent intersections.

Croy performed a roundabout feasibility study that determined a roundabout would provide the necessary congestion improvements desired at the intersection. The proposed single lane roundabout also included dual by-pass lanes, both to accommodate heavy northbound turning maneuvers and to take advantage of the four-lane cross section of Fairground Street.

The roundabout is performing as planned, minimizing delays and effectively relieving the queues that once extended to US 41. This success underscores the efficiency of the design, ensuring smooth traffic flow and improved safety for all travelers.
